Functional Life Skills

Independent Skill Building
Students learn basic daily functions – creating a budget, balancing a checkbook, calendar/task recognition, and doing household chores such as making a bed, laundry, and folding clothes.

Cooking
Students learn cooking terms, how to understand a recipe, ingredients, utensils and recipe directions needed to make a simple dish with little to no assistance.

Self-Determination
Students learn how to advocate effectively for themselves. They learn about their rights and responsibilities as adults.

Scrapbooking allows students to preserve personal and family history in the form of a scrapbook.

Functional Academics
Functional Academics increases independent living and socialization skills.

Job Readiness
The Job Readiness class assists students to identify job descriptions, job ads and access to online job searches, job applications and the interview process, proper dress, and acceptable conduct are subjects included in this curriculum.

Computer Class
The Computer class provides basic computer skills. Students will be able to use e-mail and access the internet.

Advanced Exercise Class
Each student becomes a member of the YMCA. Students will learn to use weights independently, how to Zumba and how to safely participate in water aerobics. Students will understand basic equipment safety and maintenance. Students should show an increased knowledge of health and nutrition. Volunteer opportunities allow the practice of lifeskills in the community.

Lifeskills Class
Students learn to recognize different money denominations, identify community signs, state their address and phone number and tell time.
Students learn good manners, personal hygiene, how to advocate for themselves, and follow directions.

Math Class
Students learn to recognize money denomination and symbols relating to currencies compare prices or quality to determine the best buys and how to save money when shopping. Students will learn how to write checks, balance a checkbook and how to use a calculator.

Relationships
Students learn to journal expressing their thoughts, accomplishments, goals, and understanding different types of relationships and appropriate behavior.

Men’s and Women’s Health
Students will understand how good nutrition and annual health exams lead to a healthier lifestyle.

Reading
Students learn functional word recognition and various skills to improve their ability to read. Students will also participate in a group project called “As We See It. . .”, a page in The Enrichment Center’s newsletter, The Monday Messenger.
